Hold: Describes an adjustment of the sights against the target by weapon position. This is done in order to compensate for the weapon's zero at a given range. It is understood that when you say "hold" you mean elevation. If you are making an adjustment for winds the accepted verbiage is: "holding for winds"
Zero: This is where the sights of the weapon are adjusted so that the point of aim and point of impact are the same at a given distance.
Mechanical Zero: Generally refers to when the iron sights on a rifle have been adjusted to be centered in both windage and elevation.
Battle Sight Zero: Generally refers to when the iron sights on a rifle have been adjusted to the physical characteristics of a given shooter so that the point of aim and point of impact are the same at a given distance.
Bore Sight Zero: Generally refers to when an optical aiming system has been adjusted so that the point of aim and point of impact are the same at a given distance. This relationship is strictly between the weapon and the optic. The only time a bore sight zero changes is when the optic's position on the weapon is changed.
